Opportunity: Portable works call for art

Aritistic Discipline: Visual

Spokane Arts seeks to purchase original, unframed two-dimensional artworks (including photographs, drawings, paintings, prints, mixed media, etc.), for the Spokane Public Library. Portable works will be installed in Spokane Public Library branches which serve an all-ages audience.

This opportunity is open to artists residing in Washington state in the near Spokane region (Spokane and within 40 miles of Spokane) who have original, unframed two-dimensional artworks available for purchase. Artists from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in public art are strongly encouraged to apply, including Indigenous artists, artists of color, and LGBTQ+ artists.

Artists wishing to be considered for this opportunity should submit up to 5 images of works currently available for purchase; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in late May 2021. Please do NOT include sales tax in the purchase price of each artwork. Selected artists will be responsible for all packing expenses and shipping/delivery (insured) costs to Spokane Arts. Art will be purchased unframed. The purchase price of any single artwork will not exceed $5,000. Works of art will be purchased at a variety of price ranges.

Application materials will include:

Two (2) page maximum artist résumé as a PDF.  Keep the formatting simple. Files must be less than 2MB in size.

A written statement (up to 300 words as a PDF) that expresses the intent of your work; include a description of your medium and method. Elaborate on how your work relates to the posted selection criteria.

A list of your proposed works which include your name, contact information and a title, description of artwork, size, media, price for each work of art.

Images of up to 5 works currently available for purchase; original, unframed two-dimensional artworks available for purchase (see below for size and other restrictions).

Deadline for submission: Wednesday, March 24, 2021. Art Selection will take place in April and May. Artists will be notified by May 30; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in late May 2021.

REQUIREMENTS

This opportunity is open to artists residing in Washington state in the near Spokane region (Spokane and within 40 miles of Spokane) who have original 2D artwork (including high-quality photographs, works on paper, canvas, and other media that fits size restrictions) available for purchase.

For the sake of portability, submitted work may not be over 48 inches in height or width, under 11 inches in height or width, or more than 3 inches deep (unframed).

Diversity within the collection is highly encouraged and a broad range of styles and approaches will be considered. Artists should submit works that incorporate color as well as themes and imagery suitable for public settings and culturally diverse audiences.

Artists from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in public art are strongly encouraged to apply, including Indigenous artists, artists of color, and LGBTQ+ artists.

Artworks that contain graphic depictions of violence, sexually explicit imagery and religious references are extremely difficult to display and will not be accepted.

Students as well as current Spokane Arts Board members, Spokane Arts Commissioners and advisory committee members, employees, and the business partners and immediate family members of the above agency representatives are not eligible to apply.

Spokane Arts expects to deal directly with the artist; any agreement that an artist may have with their dealer or representative must be handled between the artist and the dealer. Spokane Arts will assume no responsibility for payment of fees or percentages to gallery dealers or other artist representatives. Spokane Arts reserves the right to refuse any delivered artwork whose quality or condition is deemed inconsistent with the work sample submitted in the application.
