Lewis and Clark High School in partnership with Spokane Arts seeks to purchase original, unframed two-dimensional artworks (including photographs, drawings, paintings, prints, mixed media, etc.), for Lewis and Clark High School. Works will be installed in Lewis and Clark High School which serve an all-ages audience.
Lewis and Clark is calling for artwork that celebrates our school’s diversity and increases the visibility of our students’ many cultures. Schools that elevate diversity in a visual, public space see benefits to learning. These educational spaces invite “students with diverse experiences and identities to feel both validated by being included and to have the opportunity to humanize others whose background may differ from them, which enhances school climate by allowing all learners to feel seen and represented” (Chardin and Novak 86). The research of Cabrera, Milem, Jaquette and Marx (2014) has documented the positive effects of these educational spaces including increased student engagement and academic gains across multiple indicators from class work to standardized assessments. The Lewis and Clark artwork would be inspired by students’ voices and identities and take a central, respected place in our school.
This opportunity is open to BIPOC artists residing in Washington state in the near Spokane region (Spokane and within 40 miles of Spokane) who have original, unframed two-dimensional artworks available for purchase.
Artists wishing to be considered for this opportunity should submit up to 5 images of works currently available for purchase; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in early June 2023. Please do NOT include sales tax in the purchase price of each artwork. Selected artists will be responsible for all packing expenses and shipping/delivery (insured) costs to Spokane Arts. Art will be purchased unframed. The purchase price of any single artwork will not exceed $5,000.
Application materials will include:
Two (2) page maximum artist résumé as a PDF. Keep the formatting simple. Files must be less than 2MB in size.
Some suggested items to include in your artist résumé are:
- Contact information: At the top of each page, include your name, address, phone number, email address, and website.
- Education: List any academic degrees earned. Also include periods of study at schools or universities attended without completing a degree.
- Professional experience:
Exhibitions: List the title of the exhibition, the exhibition venue, and the city/state where the exhibition was presented. Please indicate if it was a solo, two-person, or group exhibition.
Experience: You may also consider listing experience that is relevant to your art practice such as teaching, lectures, and artist residencies. - Honors and awards: List awards, grants, fellowships, or other recognitions of merit.
- Bibliography: List books, magazines, newspapers, and catalogues that reference your work.
A written statement (up to 300 words as a PDF) that expresses the intent of your work; include a description of your medium and method. Elaborate on how your work relates to the posted selection criteria.
A list of your proposed works which include your name, contact information and a title, description of artwork, size, media, price for each work of art.
Images of up to 5 works currently available for purchase.
Deadline for submission: Friday May 26, 2023. Art Selection will take place in June. Artists will be notified no later than June 23, 2023; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in June 2023.

This opportunity is open to BIPOC artists residing in Washington state in the near Spokane region (Spokane and within 40 miles of Spokane) who have original 2D artwork (including high-quality photographs, works on paper, canvas, and other media that fits size restrictions) available for purchase.
Submitted work should not exceed the area for artwork measurements. Area for art work measures 14’6”wide by 6’8” tall.
Diversity within the collection is highly encouraged and a broad range of styles and approaches will be considered. Artists should submit works that incorporate color as well as themes and imagery suitable for public settings and culturally diverse audiences.
Artists from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in public art are strongly encouraged to apply, including Indigenous artists and artists of color.
Artworks that contain graphic depictions of violence, sexually explicit imagery and religious references are extremely difficult to display and will not be accepted.
Students as well as current Spokane Arts Board members, Spokane Arts Commissioners and advisory committee members, employees, and the business partners and immediate family members of the above agency representatives are not eligible to apply.
Spokane Arts expects to deal directly with the artist; any agreement that an artist may have with their dealer or representative must be handled between the artist and the dealer. Spokane Arts will assume no responsibility for payment of fees or percentages to gallery dealers or other artist representatives. Spokane Arts reserves the right to refuse any delivered artwork whose quality or condition is deemed inconsistent with the work sample submitted in the application.
Art Selection will take place in May/June. Artists will be notified no later than June 16, 2023; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in June 2023.
