The Avenue West Gallery has received operational support from SAGA to help with issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic including lost gallery sales commissions and relief for existing members’ fees. Marcuson states, “Although understanding and supportive, it is a lot to ask of our membership to keep paying fees without opportunities for sales.”
Avenue West’s grant will also provide funding for local artist, Aaron Smith’s, iconic 20′ x 13′ outdoor mural with a Spokane theme visible from Monroe Street on Avenue West Gallery’s west outer wall. His outdoor mural consists of a kayaker navigating river rapids. This image of Spokane will bring attention to travelers on Spokane’s Monroe Street and encourage others to stop by the nearby Avenue West Gallery. Smith commonly produces pieces featuring the city’s landscapes, but has never done a mural. With the help of the Spokane Arts Grant Awards (SAGA), Smith’s work will come to life on a larger scale and remind viewers of the many outdoor sports we’re able to enjoy in this region.
