Event: Stepwell Grand Opening

Date: May 6, 2023
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Where: Riverfront Park

We are thrilled to announce the date for the grand opening of Stepwell, a sculpture by J. Meejin Yoon of Höweler + Yoon, located in Riverfront Park, north of the Providence Playscape! Save the date and join us for a short program followed by light refreshments in celebration of this incredible piece of art.

Stepwell is an interactive sculpture that uses a renewable resource (mass timber) as its primary material. Comprised of 68 individual pieces, each hand-carved and machined, all precisely engineered to fit together like a puzzle, Stepwell explores a new, more climate-conscious way to think about our built environment. Stepwell will invite the community to sit, climb, and enjoy the unique space it creates within the park. Visitors will move through the interior of the sculpture via an ADA pathway or climb its steps to experience an elevated view of the Spokane River.

The sculpture was commissioned as part of the Riverfront Park redevelopment bond and chosen by the City of Spokane Park Board following a national call for artists. Additional funding was contributed by the City of Spokane and Spokane Arts, as well as in-kind support from Höweler + Yoon Architecture and Quarra Stone Company.

Thank you to Riverfront Spokane, Spokane Parks and Recreation, City of Spokane, Spokane Arts, Höweler + Yoon Architecture, Quarra Stone, SPVV Landscape Architects, Bacon Concrete, and so many others!

Stay tuned to our social media channels for more details about the inspiration behind Stepwell and a sneak peek into the fabrication process!
