Spokane Arts is proud to exhibit Art Romances and Molecular Dances: A Study in the integration of Poetry Art and Science at the Chase Gallery, opening Friday, December 2, 2022. Art Romances and Molecular Dances features the work of students from The Community School and will be open through December 30, 2022. The works of art in this exhibit are the culmination of a project asking students to consider the driving question: How can we use a deep understanding of atoms, molecules, & chemical reactions to communicate their beauty abstractly?

For this exhibit students operated on the premise that engaging with chemistry concepts through poetry and art can foster a deep understanding of the universe around us. Students were asked to create original works of poetry and art and, through these works, communicate concepts of chemistry. The pieces shown here depict a wide range of chemistry concepts, from patterns of valence electrons, to trends in the periodic table, to characteristics of chemical reactions, and much more. Each student has written an explanation of the chemistry they chose to explore, their sources of inspiration, and how the chemistry is depicted in the art.
