Spokane Chinese Association (SCA) is a non-profit organization that connects and unites people of Chinese heritage in the Greater Spokane area with the purpose of fostering stronger community connections and pursuing a more enriched quality of life. Over the course of their grant year (2019-2020) SCA will be sharing their culture and their stories in public performances, demonstrations, and storytelling events for local audiences.
Traditional dance, calligraphy, Chinese painting, and stories from local Chinese residents will take place at senior centers, libraries, and schools across the city. Performances will be put on by seasoned and dedicated artists who have practiced their craft for years.
With SAGA funding will allow for the purchase of traditional dance costumes, and materials for workshop participants, and will provide stipends for artists and storytellers. The new, storytelling initiative will provide English language and presentation support to English learners presenting their stories, sometimes for the first time in a public venue.
The major Lunar New Year Celebration in February 2020 will take place at University High School, storytelling events are planned for May and October, and dance, calligraphy and painting performances will continue throughout the year.
