I make one-of-a-kind mixed media pieces and sculpted whimsical puppetry from a land of Old World fiction. My interest in this time period started when I was quite young, through the delightful stories of Merlin and the Grimm Brother’s fairy tales. Illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Sir John Tenniel fed my young mind and continue to inspire me. I was fascinated by archaeology, Indian cliff dwellings, dinosaur digs – worlds long forgotten for which stories could be invented.

CarLy Haney

My name is CarLy and I create baroque/gothic wall mounts using real taxidermy tarantulas. Each piece is hand-spread and completely unique, displayed without glass and allowing spectators to come as close as their courage may allow. In addition to spiders, I often take commission orders to mount other specimens such as bats, bees, butterflies, beetles and murder hornets. I take much inspiration from the elegant old buildings of Spokane, as well as the regal decor of chateaus like damask, lace, velvet and gold.

My focus is on the complexities and intricacies created as paper is transformed through inelegant, forceful manipulation. The scale of my work is an invitation to intimacy, permission for the observer to closely examine the exquisite scars born from the forces that played upon the paper. The color, texture, construction, and composition of each piece tells that paper’s individual story. I want observers to acknowledge the brutal beauty of that story, seeing not just the paper’s innate vulnerability but its noble defiance. The end goal is not for my pieces to elicit mere appreciation for the awkward loveliness of the paper’s damaged imperfection, but instill real empathy for it’s inherent power and dignity, and by extension, the power and dignity of our frail human imperfection.
