Spokane Arts is seeking individual artists or artist teams to submit proposals for a new mural project to be installed as part of the Alleyways project in the alley on the 100 North block between Wall and Howard streets. This alley is getting a pedestrian-focused update and the mural should contribute to a safe, colorful, vibrant pathway for residents and visitors. Projects should focus on creating a vibrant, eye-catching mural that will welcome people to the alley. The mural will be located on the east end of the alley near Howard. This will be second mural in the alley, joining Tim Lacey III and Erin Johnston’s Fortune Catz mural on the west end of the alley.
The painting will take place this spring 2020. The mural will be installed on brick, covering a space of just over 500 sq feet (approximately 32′ tall by 16′ wide, and beginning about 16′ above street level). The artist stipend will be awarded in the amount of $5,000. The artist will be responsible for cleaning and priming the walls before mural installation. Spokane Arts will provide primer plus a paint and equipment stipend of $550. Spokane Arts will provide a scissor or boom lift for up to 4 weeks. The artist is responsible for any additional costs for painting supplies, brushes, additional paint etc., and renting scaffolding if needed.
Deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 9, at 11:59 p.m. Submissions only accepted through SmarterSelect application found here. Questions? Email Mika@spokanearts.org.
Please submit your expected timeline, materials you plan to use, and up to ten images of previous work and a concept sketch, rendering, or narrative of the proposed work. The jury will consider both your past work and your concept for this project. The mural will be located on the south wall of the alley, on the eastern end of the alley at Howard Street. It will be about 32’ tall and 16’ long. The mural will be on the open brick space starting approximately 16′ above the ground and going up to the top of the building.
