North Monroe Business District, a not-for-profit volunteer-run independent business district, is seeking proposals from mural artists for two new community murals on North Monroe!
Interested artists should send the following: 1) basic concept sketches for consideration and 2) detail of prior mural experience. Applications are due by Monday, 9/21 and should be emailed to meetonmonroe@gmail.com.
Applications will be reviewed by the North Monroe Business District board, property owners, and tenants to select the right fit for both buildings. Both murals are to be installed by 10/10/20. Top candidates will be invited to complete a design with feedback and approval from North Monroe stakeholder committee.  They encourage imaginative use of the space in the concept design – it doesn’t have to be inside a “box,” given that both walls are larger than will be able to be covered with the available budget. Selected artists’ designs may be used for noncommercial promotional materials of the North Monroe Business District.
The Lloyd Building: Roughly 10′ x 15′; $1,200 artist stipend.
$1200 artist stipend to cover artist’s design, time, and materials. This location is near our farmers market, a florist, and is home to our beloved Elliotts restaurant, Hi Neighbor Tavern, and apartments… we would like the design concepts to reflect beauty, growth, fresh food or flowers, and/or a general “welcoming & good neighborhood vibe.”
Marilyn’s on Monroe: Roughly 15′ x 25′; $3,000 artist stipend.
$3000 artist stipend to cover artist’s design, time, and materials. With the tenant being Marilyn’s on Monroe vintage shop, and being adjacent to multiple vehicle-focused businesses (car wash, vehicle repair shops, Zip’s Drive Thru, etc) we would like to encourage design concepts that nod to the history of cruising on Monroe, vintage cars, and even inclusion of Marilyn Monroe herself and the era she thrived in.
