Willow Springs Books is an independent press in Spokane, overseen by Eastern Washington University’s MFA Creative Writing program. In 2016, Willow Springs launched the Zodiac Poetry Series with the publication of “Heart of the Rat, An Anthology,” which is the first part of a twelve-part series. The small press plans to publish an anthology of poetry and short prose for each animal of the Chinese Zodiac. The next anthology in the series is Year of the Dog. MFA student Tessa Bryant says, “To our surprise, “Heart of the Rat” has been one of our best-selling books, and we expect our anthology on the dog will be even more popular, since the dog is such a beloved animal.”
WITH SAGA SUPPORT, and through various community partnerships, Willow Springs will be sourcing some their contributions from writing workshops focusing on dogs. This will allow children and underrepresented adults the opportunity to have their work featured next to nationally recognized poets.
“We don’t want a stuffy anthology of academic writers,” writes Bryant, “We want a book full of powerful work from national names to emerging Spokane authors.”
Willow Springs Books is an established literary press that consistently publishes books that are beautifully designed and cleanly and professionally edited. The press will be using SAGA funds to solicit new work, design print and distribute the new “Year of the Dog” chapbook.
