The Shades of Motherhood Network will premiere Girl Get a Doula, a documentary and traveling maternal health exhibit, on April 15, 2026, at the Magic Lantern Theatre in recognition of Black Maternal Health Week. The project captures more than 25 stories from Black mothers, doulas, families, and care providers, documenting how Spokane’s “doula desert” has been transformed through culturally responsive, community-led care. Developed in collaboration with over 30 local partners—including the Carl Maxey Center, Diverse Roots, and the Health and Wellness District—the film and exhibit center lived experience while highlighting the impact of the Birth Equity Project and the organization’s SOUL Framework.
SAGA funding will support continued documentary development through 2027, including artist compensation, ongoing story collection, and the creation of a multi-site traveling exhibit installed across community and healthcare spaces throughout Spokane County. Featuring large-scale photography, oral histories, and educational materials, the exhibit will expand access to maternal health storytelling while preserving a critical archive of systems change. Together, the film and exhibition function as both cultural documentation and public health intervention—advancing awareness, informing policy, and strengthening pathways for equitable, community-centered care.
