Spokane Playwrights Laboratory (SPL) founding members Scott Doughty and Dahveed Bullis are professional theater artists who specialize in playwriting and new-play development. Combined, they have over 40 years of experience in this arena. With the founding of Spokane Playwrights Laboratory, Doughty and Bullis directed their efforts and expertise into growing and developing the local playwriting community, filling a creative gap between the space between the page and the stage in Spokane.
SPL provided a high quality and wide scope of services to Spokane playwrights in their first year of operation (2021), ultimately developing and staging six original scripts by local playwrights, marking a successful 2021-2022 season.
This year, SAGA is providing project funding for intensive, month long professional script development workshops for Spokane playwrights. In targeted, adaptive programming, SPL will help writers develop scripts for the final workshop performance, a staged read-through accompanied by audience feedback.
This project was supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
