Art, The Science of Hope, and Restorative Justice is a collaborative, arts-based program designed for youth in the juvenile justice system, that will be delivered in the classrooms of Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center (SCJDC) and Success Through Academic Connections (SAC).
After release from detention, most youth are placed on two years of probation, with monthly check-ins with their probation counselor, where they continue to receive support and resources. This includes planning for high school and beyond by creating individual goals. Students who want to continue exploring art will be supported in doing so through this process. Lead by professional artists, students will explore a variety of artistic media and techniques and practice the science of hope by creating works that reflect their personal journeys, challenges, and dreams.
At the request of the judiciary, select student artworks will be displayed in the lobby and courtrooms of the Spokane County Juvenile Court building – offering inspiration to other youth and families walking similar paths. Students will always have the choice of whether to donate their work to the project or keep it for themselves.
Art, The Science of Hope, and Restorative Justice will help young people see themselves not through the lens of their mistakes, but through the power of their potential. By integrating visual art with the psychology of hope and restorative justice practices, we position art as a force of personal and societal change.
