Grantee: American Institute of Architects (AIA) Spokane

Project Title: 2025 Spokane Design Summit with Keynote Speaker Pascale Sablan
Year awarded: 2024, Round 2

The American Institute of Architects of Spokane (AIA Spokane) is an organization dedicated to the uplifting of diverse voices and perspectives within the architecture community. Each year, AIA Spokane invites an architect or designer who creates engaging architecture to share their knowledge with students, professionals, and the interested public in Spokane through a keynote presentation. The 2025 Design Summit will be showcasing the activist work of Pascale Sablan, who works to advance architecture by bringing visibility and voice to the issues concerning female, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC designers.

Pascale Sablan will be the cornerstone of a broader series of events that bring together students (both current design students at WSU, UI, and SCC as well as high school students interested in pursuing a career in architecture), professionals, peer organizations, city leaders, and the broader public for conversations around activism architecture, the importance of design within our built environment, and the crucial role of diversity and inclusion within the design process. AIA Spokane strives to ‘broaden the tent,’ to not only acknowledge the value that diverse perspectives play in the creation of our built environment but to elevate the discussions of inclusion to the top of our community. SAGA funding will help to compensate Sablan for her contributions at AIA Spokane.
