Dog & Pony is proud to present Satellite of Venus, the first solo exhibition of Jacqueline McCormick, a Spokane-based artist who hijacks cultural production as a means of feminist storytelling. McCormick’s visual work evolved from fiction and poetry writing, where she developed skills for crafting stories and creating imaginary environments. Her raw material comes from advertisements in diverse cultural magazines, such as National Geographic and Artforum. From this abundance of aspirational images, McCormick transforms familiar, commercial narratives into fantastical compositions. McCormick’s artmaking features women, literally sliced from quotidian space, in futuristic places where they have found freedom. “I’m intensely interested in women’s lives – all of us – what we’re thinking, suffering from, moving through. I grew up on media and stories that weren’t mine, and I’m keen to electrify and build stories that are women’s, that are ours.”

Like much of McCormick’s work, Satellite of Venus is grounded in a yearning for collective vision and power. Inspiration also comes from Kazimierz Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration, which understands human growth in terms of individual responses to existential tension.
