Creating art is not just what I do, it’s my calling, my purpose, my dharma – 2D, 3D, singing, writing – I love it all, but working with clay is my favorite. My work is the antithesis of minimalism; I create abstract sculptures with designs that are over-the-top and even extravagant while whispering important concepts and ideas. The style of my work has Maximalist vibes; it’s like modern Rococo: elaborate ornamentation with bright, dynamic colors that catch people’s attention and bring joy – or at least a little fun – into their lives. I want my work to spark curiosity and draw people in with how absolutely Extra it is, and then cause them to think deeper about the issues hidden underneath the glamour.
I work primarily in clay but no materials are off-limits. I love adding wire, foam, polyurethane, and resin to my sculptures, and I’m constantly searching for new materials to support the themes and structures of my work.
I draw inspiration from artists such as Dan Lam and Kate Tova, and I am deeply inspired by the process of creation itself. I often find that the more I create, the more I want to create more. I also find inspiration in simple things, such as the sound of my children’s laughter, the feel of my bare feet on the warm grass, the way a song moves me, or the way the ocean makes me feel alive.
