OVERVIEW: Airway Heights was incorporated in 1955 as a small community supporting the Galena Air Depot. The City is located within the channel scablands, which is a unique geological region where the landscape was carved and defined by the Great Missoula Floods over 13,000 years ago. The presence of Fairchild Airforce Base and the Spokane International Airport, as well as, both the Spokane and Kalispel Tribe of Indians, have shaped and defined the area and community of the nearly 12,000 people that call Airway Heights home.
The City of Airway Heights Arts Commission is seeking original designs created by area artists to cover a utility box located on the corner of S. Lawson Street and Hwy. 2 in downtown Airway Heights (See attached PICTURE). A selected artist design will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around the box by a third party design fabricator. The intent of the project is to beautify this utility box, bringing art to an otherwise utilitarian surface and giving artists an opportunity to develop a public art experience to enhance Downtown Airway Heights.
Downtown Airway Heights is defined as the area located along State Hwy. 2 to the north and south between Lundstrom Street and Lawson St. This area features some of Airway Heights original structures, build prior to incorporation in 1955.
The selected artist will be awarded $500 per box design. The Arts Commission will select the winning artist with design concept. Up to four designs per Artist will be accepted.
DESIGN GUIDANCE: The City of Airway Heights Arts Commission will review the submissions and select a winning design.
This is the first project of the newly formed City of Airway Heights Arts Commission, and will be utilizing funds dedicated to the revitalization of downtown Airway Heights.
The Airway Heights Arts Commission would like to encourage artists to celebrate and consider this history in their designs. Designs should reflect the cultural, environmental, and/or historical identity of Airway Heights.
