Grantee: Square Top Theatre

Project Title: The Scent of a Thousand Rains
Year awarded: 2019, Round 2

The Scent of a Thousand Rains (TSTR) will offer local performances of a theatre production in verse for an actor and violinist, and a live recording for local public radio. The show features local actor, Ryan Childers, a veteran of Seattle’s theatre scene and violinist Tana Bachman-Bland, a regular with the Spokane Symphony, Tango Volcado, and Tedesca String Quartet. Bachman-Bland arranged, composed, and performs the music for TSTR. The production is conceived and directed by Charles M Pepiton, STT’s Producing Artistic Director and Associate Professor and Chair of Theatre & Dance at Gonzaga University. The text was written by Damon Falke, an American author, poet, and playwright.  The Scent of a Thousand Rains (TSTR) is Square Top Theatre’s debut project in the city of Spokane.

TSTR is an original theatre production offered in cooperation with Spokane Public Library, Spokane Public Radio, and Washington State Parks. The premiere will take place September 13-14, 2019, at the Vista House in Mount Spokane State Park. Additional performances will be offered with guided discussions at Spokane Public Library’s Downtown (October 3, 2019) and Shadle Park (January 17, 2020) branches. Finally, Spokane Public Radio will broadcast a recording of the show throughout their listening area. The recorded performance will remain available as a free, downloadable podcast. SAGA funding will help cover production costs and ensure the performances are free to the public.
