Spokane Arts Announces New Exhibit Landscapes Reimagined at the Chase Gallery, opening Friday, March 3, 2023

Have you ever seen an artwork that made you look at a familiar landscape in a new way? Spokane Arts invites you to join them for a unique art exhibition, Landscapes Reimagined, featuring artworks from Roxanne Everett and Josh Hobson that explore the beauty of nature from a new perspective. Come explore the creative interpretations of familiar landscapes and be inspired to look at the world around you in a new light.

Roxanne Everette is a landscape painter. Her artwork offers a view into a varied range of habitats and natural landscapes, usually devoid of humans or their artifacts. Her years of work as a National Park backcountry ranger and as a forest ecologist has allowed her to recognize and focus on the unique aspects of each environment. Roxanne’s further background as an architect and experienced painter underpins her ability to render interesting visual perspectives with a wide range of skills and techniques. Her paintings share the beauty of natural ecosystems while also underscoring their fragility and preciousness. Everette elaborates, “It is my hope that this work will reconnect viewers with the land, giving them a sense of belonging while awakening the responsibility of stewardship.” Her recent work explores altered landscapes which have been impacted by natural or unnatural events. These disturbances provide an unexpected awareness of processes that normally go unrecognized; a surprising twist that may render an otherwise uneventful landscape very distinctive and sometimes quite beautiful. Collectively, these pieces share the beauty and emotion of natural ecosystems while underscoring their fragility and preciousness. It is a combination of love and science.

Josh Hobson is a lens-based artist and is deeply interested with the fluidity of photography– constantly redefining itself and problematizing its status as a fixed medium. Through a broad practice that embraces the studio, still life, re-photography, material experimentation, abstraction and non- representation, he aims to challenge and expand upon the primary tenets of the medium: originality, faithfulness, reproduction and indexicality. “My practice is engaged with an analysis of, and experimentation with the fundamental attributes of the medium of photography,” Hobson explains. Through material engagement, his works explore elements such as frame, plane, the behavior of light and the nature of the representative image. The ontology of photography is of particular interest for Hobson and many of his works aim to shed light on the origin and embedded ideologies of images through specific process-oriented actions. Hobson works in modes of abstraction, collage, appropriation and straight photography, often bringing multiple approaches to bear in the production of a single work.

“Landscapes Reimagined is a unique and inspiring experience that will hopefully move you in a profound way. This is an opportunity to be immersed in a stunning visual environment and explore the creative interpretations of landscapes. Not only is it a great way to appreciate art, but it also provides a chance to make meaningful connections with others in the community who share an appreciation for the beauty of the world around us,” notes Shantell Jackson, Spokane Arts Program Director.

The Chase Gallery is open to the public whenever City Hall is open, Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This exhibit’s opening reception will take place First Friday March 3, 2023 4:00-7:00 p.m. and close on March 31, 2023.
