In the summer of 2023, the Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University will present the Inland Northwest Modern Quilt Juried Exhibition, organized by Paul Manoguerra, director/curator, Karen Kaiser, curator of education, Britta Arendt, museum registrar/program coordinator, and Robin Dare, preparator/art handler at the museum. The museum will partner with the Inland Northwest Modern Quilt Guild (INMOD) to promote the call for entries and the exhibition guidelines.
INMOD was founded January 2016 in Spokane, Washington to meet the growing need to have a modern quilting community in the region. Its mission is “to provide an environment of inspiration, education, and charity in our community through fresh-modern quilting.” Likewise, borrowing from the “Introduction” to The Modern Quilt Guild’s 2017 publication Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century: “Modern quilts are utilitarian. They are art. They tell stories. They are graphic, improvisational, or minimalist. They break the rules. They make a statement.”
Selection of works for the Inland Northwest Modern Quilt Juried Exhibition will be made by the staff of the Jundt Art Museum. Works will be chosen for the show based upon the museum staff’s understanding of artistic quality, merit, visual aesthetics, and “wall power,” the quilt’s adherence to the mission of the guild and “modern quilting,” and the observance of the rules and guidelines of the application process.
All submissions must represent completed quilts. No incomplete quilts, conceptual works, or project proposals will be considered. Quilts must be suitable for museum exhibition installation, complete with all their own respective hardware or materials. For example, larger quilts must have a 4 inch finished sleeve sewn to the top back edge of the quilt (please include an 1/8” ease in the sleeve). Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edges. For smaller quilts (under 25 inches wide) a 2” hanging sleeve should be attached in the same manner. In addition, all quilts should include a flat (not round) wood dowel rod to appropriately fit just beyond the sleeve but not to the edge of the quilt for proper and safe (for the quilt and for visitors) hanging on a wall in the galleries. There are no specific quilt size limitations but gallery space is limited.
Quilters may submit up to five different quilts. Each quilt must be submitted with only one image showing the entire quilt.
(Optional) Quilters may submit a .pdf, .doc, or other acceptable single file containing additional pictures showing detail(s) of any/all entered quilts. Each picture in the .pdf or .doc file should be labeled to indicate which quilt it is from.
The submission deadline for all materials is Monday, January 23, 2023, 10:59pm PST.
Online submissions
All applications are handled through the separate submissions management website, CaFÉ. If you do not already have an account with CaFÉ, you will need to complete the free registration in order to fill out your submission form and to submit your images. There is a one-time $25 fee to submit quilts, which is managed through CaFÉ. This fee includes submission of up to 5 quilts.
