The sn̓k̓ʷan̓ɬqtn̓ Community Garden, located across from Shadle Park High School on Spokane’s North Hill at Longfellow and Oak, is preparing to bloom with a vibrant new mural celebrating native plants and the Salish language. Painted by local artist and Salish School parent, Emma Noyes, the mural will adorn the garden shed and feature seven culturally significant native plants currently growing in the garden. Each plant will be labeled with its Latin and Salish names, with a QR code linking viewers to more in-depth educational content. Salish School students will participate in the project by painting the plant forms that Emma outlines.
The mural furthers the garden’s mission of cultivating beauty, food, and cultural connection through volunteer-powered education and access. As a regular site for student engagement from both Shadle Park and the Salish School, the garden emphasizes hands-on learning about food sovereignty, traditional ecological knowledge, and plant stewardship. Funding from SAGA will cover the purchase of materials and provide a stipend to the artist.
