Reinaldo Gil Zambrano is a Spokane-based printmaking artist from Caracas, Venezuela. Gil’s current practice includes the creation of large pieces using relief printing applications, and collaboratively incorporating the audience in his printing process. He may be best known in the region for his popular First Vandal Steamroller Project and Ink Rally where community members in Idaho used an industrial asphalt roller as a press to print large scale works.
As a local printmaking artist eager to remain in Spokane, Gil wants to build his audience and educate the local community in the art of traditional printmaking. However, access to traditional printmaking equipment is difficult outside the university system. In its current state, the practice of relief and intaglio printing in Spokane is limited to universities and college campuses, and large-format presses are often cost-prohibitive to artists.
To create opportunity for this popular artform to thrive in Spokane, SAGA is supporting Reinaldo in the purchase of a pre-owned etching press and related materials for his studio in downtown Spokane. This press will allow Gil to develop his personal practice and to host public workshops, educating others about traditional printmaking arts.
In April, RGZ PRINTS will open for its first “Intro to Printmaking” class with continuing workshops available to the public on a monthly basis.
