Opportunity: BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH ART: FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MURAL PROJECT
Aritistic Discipline: Visual
Franklin Elementary School Parent Volunteer Organizations were awarded a grant through Spokane Arts to design and create a mural at the shelter building in Lincoln Park. We’ve secured the required permissions through Spokane Parks and Recreation, the final design will need to be submitted for approval from the City before any work begins. The purpose of this project is to inspire children in our community to notice and appreciate the art that lives all around them and to build pride in their community through connection and collaboration with teachers, family, neighbors, and local artists. Through this project students will develop the artistic voice and skills needed to create an original mural, while learning about the importance of public art and the skills and value local artists bring to their community. This project will be managed by Franklin Parent Teacher Group (PTG) and Franklin Alternative Parent Participation Learning Experience program (APPLE). We are looking to contract with a local artist to design, plan, and execute the mural, involving the students as much as possible in all stages of the process.
