By targeting an underutilized and unnoticed part of Lincoln Park for attention and beautification through public art, Franklin Elementary’s PTG and APPLE Program are providing an inspiring opportunity for the students and community to work together to improve this shelter space for the good of the Lincoln Park and Franklin Elementary area. This project was inspired by Matt Smith, who shared that his first taste of public art came when he was allowed to paint a small square on the floor of this very Lincoln Park shelter as an elementary student, which lead him into a career in the arts.
This project will allow students to contribute to their community in a meaningful and long-lasting way that differs from the typical “community service” activities students may have participated in through Franklin’s Service Club or outside of school. These students will grow up understanding their role in supporting local artists, local art commissions, art education, and the youth of the community.
SAGA will fund every part of this project, including remuneration for mural artists, location preparation, paint, and in-class arts enrichment activities.
