Grantee: Spokane Zine Fest

Project Title: Spokane Zine Fest
Year awarded: 2023, Round 1

After a three-year hiatus, the founders of Spokane Zine Fest, Chelsea Martin and Ian Amberson, are bringing the festival back in a big way. Spokane Zine Fest is a one-day public festival in Spokane’s Central Library celebrating zines, small press books, handmade artworks, and other limited edition works. This year it will take place on May 13th.

This year, in addition to the 30+ artists who will be present to sell and talk about their work, Martin and Amberson are working with local artists to offer five to seven free workshops to showcase and teach unique art practices. These workshops will allow community members to get hands-on experience with art forms they would not normally have the opportunity to explore, and to understand zine-making and other diy art forms in an intimate way.

SAGA funding will be used to sponsor these workshops, including pay to the workshop leaders, supplies for all attendees, promotion for each specific workshop, and “Zine Fest Dollars” for participants to spend at Zine Fest tables. In addition, funding will also be used to ensure Spokane Zine Fest’s inclusivity and success of our vendors, including a number of table scholarships, the creation of a Community Table where people unable to attend the fest can still have the opportunity to sell their work, and promotion for the zine fest.
