Grantee: Chase Ogden

Project Title: The River Speaks
Year awarded: 2022, Round 3

With 20 years of filmmaking experience, EWU film professor Chase Ogden returns to his roots on the Spokane River to make a film highlighting the need to protect the water for future generations. Collaborating with Spokane River activists and experts, Ogden will draw on his experience and expertise to direct a legacy film celebrating the Spokane River and the people it has sustained for over a thousand generations. In order to provide a holistic understanding of the river, the film will feature a wide range of voices on the topic, including Spokane Tribe members, sociologists, philosophers, anglers, and scientists.

SAGA funding will support Ogden’s proposal for a feature length documentary film exploring the Spokane River’s past, present and potential future. Produced locally, the documentary will utilize local talent and focus while raising awareness and inspiring compassion for the Spokane River. Once completed, the film will be submitted to festivals that highlight issues like natural history, conservation, outdoor activity, and the Pacific Northwest.
